I read recently about a colony of alpine and Italian cested newts at Newdigate in Surrey. Would anyone be interested in going to see these and can anyone clarify the legal implications? I presume that if any of these are caught, they cannot be released (so what should happen to them?). And if there are great crested present too, even disturbance is illegal?

Keen for any further thoughts on this.

James

Yes, that's correct. The recent study investigating hybridisation with cristatus at the site had to get a license to re-release the carnifex they caught.
